Important Announcements and Updates

Monday, May 16:
Your final grades for the semester will be posted at MyNCC (login required) and are also listed below by ID number. These grades contain generous scaling, including bonus points and adjustments, and all extra credit opportunities were announced in class and were also posted here as well as on the main page; in fact, it was possible to earn fourteen bonus points this semester, as well as an additional bonus for perfect attendance. Therefore, do not email me to ask about extra credit or other things you can do to bring your average up since you were almost passing or just one point away from the A and so on.

Any remaining work may be picked up in the Fall 2016 semester, by appointment only. Enjoy the break.

Friday, May 13:
While some might consider today an inauspicious day for announcements, I have finished reading final research essays. A few observations:

Section J1:

Section K3:

I have not yet calculated your final grades; they will be posted by Monday afternoon, however.

Finally, as previously announced, I will be in my office for conferences on Monday.

Enjoy the weekend.

Sunday, May 8:
As a reminder, final research essay projects are due in class on Tuesday, 10 May (K3) and Wednesday, 11 May (J1).

The final research paper should be at least five to seven pages (1250-1500 words minimum), with a cover page and Works Cited page (cover page and Works Cited do not count toward the five- to seven-page requirement). It must be argumentative (persuasive), with a clear, explicit, and assertive thesis statement, and must use a minimum of three to five secondary sources; secondary sources must be scholarly/professional criticism or analysis, not summaries, reviews, or analysis from sites such as e-Notes, SparkNotes, Wikipedia*, 123HelpMe, or Gradesaver.com. You must include at least one short quotation, one longblockquotation, and one paraphrase, and these sources must be properly documented (utilizing MLA format), and integrated into your writing smoothly and correctly.

The essay must be submitted in a research folder, including your Preliminary Draft and copies of all sources used. Be sure to print out or photocopy all secondary sources, and highlight all relevant passages, whether quoted, paraphrased, or summarized. Failure to submit a complete research essay in a folder according to these instructions will be grounds for failure on the assignment.

Finally, as posted below, I will not be holding my normal office hours tomorrow.
From 9:00 until 10:15 am I will be Y 16, the Placement Office; you can find me there in case of serious issues.

Friday, May 6:
On Monday, May 9, I will not be holding office hours in Y 203.
From 9:00 until 10:15 am I will be coordinating exit exam read-ins in Y 16, the Placement Office.

Friday, April 29:
Completed research essay drafts are due in class on Tuesday, 3 May (K3) and Wednesday, 4 May (J1).

A finished, typed draft of the completed research essay must be brought to class for peer review, evaluation, and comments. This should be a complete draft of your research essay, using a minimum of three to five secondary sources, five to seven pages, and including both a cover page and Works Cited page. Failure to bring the required essay will result in a zero for the assignment.

Note: You do not need to submit the folder containing copies of your sources at this time.

Sunday, April 25:
Note the following assignments for this week, including changes:

Argument Essay Revisions are due Monday 25 April (J1)/Tuesday 26 April (K3), as previously announced and posted. Your revision should be a completed essay of at least three to four (3-4) pages (750 to 1000 words) based upon your draft previously submitted:

You should include with your essay the draft and pre-writing previously submitted. As always, your essays should be correctly formatted, and should be grammatically correct, free of errors in mechanics, grammar, usage, spelling, and documentation. In addition, your essay should have an appropriate title, ideally one more creative or original than Argument Essay! And underline your thesis!

Annotated Bibliographies for your research project are now due Wed. 27 Apr. (J1)/Thu. Apr. 28 (K3). You must submit an annotated preliminary bibliography with a minimum of five to seven sources correctly cited according to MLA style. In addition to a correct citation for each source, you must include a description or summary of the source, at least two to three sentences, and an explanation of how you foresee incorporating it into your essay. For additional information on Annotated Bibliographies, see the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL)s Annotated Bibliographies, as well as Sample Annotated Bibliography and Ebel, Kimberly, Class and Gender in Cinderella: Annotated Bibliography.

Monday, April 18:
The readings and assignments for this week are as follows:

Section J1:

Section K3

Note: The Annotated Bibliography for your research project is due Monday, 25 Apr. (Section J1) or Tuesday, April 26 (K3).

Sunday, April 10:
Just a reminder that to better integrate the classroom lessons with the labs,  I have switched the order of the readings for this week. Note the changes, below.

Section J1:

Section K3

Tuesday, April 5:
The schedule for next week has been changed. To better integrate the classroom lesson with the lab,  I have switched the order of the readings.
For Tue. April 12 (K3) and Wed. April 13 (J1), read  Documentation and MLA Style (Bullock 480-532), MLA Style (MindTap 16).
For
Thu. April 14 (K3) and Mon. April 18 (J1), read Douglas, The Dark Side of Science (Bullock 124-127).

In addition, I have moved the due date for the Argument essay back by one class period, to Thu. April 14 for Section K3 and Mon. April 18 for J1.

Friday, April 1:
I have posted an additional extra credit opportunity on the main page:
The Spring 2016 semester MLA and APA Research Seminars begin on Tuesday, April 12 and continue through Thursday, May 5.

Note: Since we use MLA, not APA, I have only provided dates and times for those sessions.
If you are taking a class that requires APA format, those sessions are also recommended, but will not earn extra credit.

Tuesday, March 29
As explained in class, Midterm Essay revisions are due on Monday, April 4 (J1) or Tuesday, April 5 (K3).

Revised midterm essays must be at least three to four (3-4) pages (750 to 1000 words, minimum), typed (in 12-point Times New Roman), double-spaced, with one-inch margins, and stapled when submitted. You must also submit the bluebook, prewriting, and a one-page explanation of your changes.

In addition, as explained in class, you must complete and submit an additional form this time, here.

Revisions submitted without these two additional documents will not be accepted.

Thursday, March 24:
I hope you have been enjoying a relaxing and productive break. Just a few announcements and reminders:

Midterm essays will be returned next week; revisions are due one week later, on Monday, April 4 (J1) or Tuesday, April 5 (K3). In addition to the required required one-page explanation of your changes, you must complete and submit an additional form, to be explained in class. Revisions submitted without these two additional documents will not be accepted.

I have changed the scheduled readings for next week; the change has already been posted on the schedule on the main page. Friday, March 11:
As per the syllabus, Essay 2 was due in class on Tuesday, March 8 (K3), or Wednesday, March 9 (J1).

In addition, be sure you have completed the Compare-Contrast Prewriting.
Read the assignment carefully, and complete the prewriting (handwritten) and the three thesis statements (typed) as instructed.
If you completed it in lab, I have already marked and returned it. If you were absent, complete it before class next week.
Be sure to bring this to class with you on Tuesday, March 15 (K3) or Wednesday, March 16 (J1).

Monday, March 7:
Essay 2 is due in class on Tuesday, March 8 (K3), or Wednesday, March 9 (J1).
In addition, be sure you have completed the readings for this date:
Fallows, Throwing Like a Girl (Bullock 100-105); there will be a quiz.

Monday, February 29:
I have corrected the dates for Essay 2 both on the main page and in the instructions.
The final essay is due in class on Tuesday, March 8 (K3), or Wednesday, March 9 (J1).

I have also adjusted the schedule to account for the class cancellation on Monday, February 22.

Wednesday, February 24:
As announced in class, revisions of Essay 1 are due Tuesday, March 1 (Section K3) and Wednesday, March 2 (J1).

All essays that did not receive a passing grade may be revised and resubmitted; essays receiving a passing grade may also be revised and resubmitted, but only after the student has met with the instructor during office hours (by appointment only) to discuss revisions. If you did not submit a completed essay on time, according to the syllabus, you will receive a grade of zero and may not submit a revision. However, this one time, I will allow you to bring a completed, typed essay to the Writing Center, review it with a tutor, revise it, and submit that for at least partial credit.

Your revisions, regardless of which of the three categories above you fall into, must be substantially revised, not merely corrected versions of the original essay (revisions should be based upon the Revising and Editing Checklist and relevant information from class and the textbooks), and must be submitted with the original marked essay attached as well as one full typed page detailing the changes made, in the following  pattern:

  • Paragraph 1: Changes in content. What was added, deleted, or modified.

  • Paragraph 2: Changes in organization. What sentences, ideas, or paragraphs were moved, how things were rearranged, and why.

  • Paragraph 3: Cosmetic level changes. What specific editing for grammar was performed, or what corrections made in punctuation, mechanics, and diction.

Evidence of substantial revision may result in a better grade for the assignment.

Monday, February 22:
Due to unforeseen circumstances, I will not not be on campus today and will have to cancel class.
Note: This applies to Section J1 only; Section K3 should meet as scheduled tomorrow.
The readings for today should be completed for Wednesday's class instead:

Explaining a Process (Bullock 382-386)

Goodheart, How to Mummify a Pharoah (Handout)

I will also return Essay 1 on Wednesday and we will discuss revisions.

Thursday, February 11:
Although Essay 1 was due in class on Wednesday, Feb. 10 (Section J1) or today, Feb. 11 (K3), I received essays from only 27 out of 39 students.
As the syllabus clearly states, late work will be penalized 10% for each day or portion thereof it is submitted after the due date, if it is accepted.
Anything not in my mailbox in Bradley Hall before 9:30
am Friday will receive a zero, and essays will not be accepted after break.

Monday, February:
As a reminder, the first two chapters of Mindtap and the associated exercises should be completed before the next lab (Tuesday or Wednesday);
See the schedule, here.

Wednesday, January 27:
The Writing Center is now officially open; see the schedule here.
